If you've been through an MJST training+coaching program or taken a tour through the Training section of this app, there's a good chance you're familiar with The Survivor's Guide to Thriving – a seven-step process to go from surviving to thriving in any behavior. This concept (which I've included a copy of below, in case you need a refresher) drives everything we do here at MJST and is the approach that has helped so many of our clients reach their goals.
The part of the model you may not be aware of, though, is that little line you see above in between Suffering and Appropriate Effort – The Magic Mirror.
The Magic Mirror is the thing that keeps most of us stuck. It's the reason so many people never leave Suffering, even when they have so much potential in front of them. Here's how it works:
Like a rearview mirror, it shows what's behind you. Even if you don't like where you've been, it's familiar. The Magic Mirror reminds you how comfortable the status quo is, the people in your life who don't want you to change, and how you can avoid risk by staying exactly where you are.
Like a regular mirror, it shows you yourself – all your insecurities, fears and limiting beliefs. The Magic Mirror reflects back all those feelings of "not being good enough" to take the next step or not being deserving of something greater.
Like a two-way mirror, you get a look through to the "hard" work it's going to take to change. Trips to the gym. Tough conversations. Walking away from bad relationships. The Magic Mirror says, "See what's ahead of you? You don't want that."
The Magic Mirror is a big, fat liar.
The Magic Mirror is your "lizard" or "caveman" brain, trying to keep you safe and away from the scary, risky actions that are sometimes (all the time?) needed to reap the greatest rewards.
Smash that mirror.
The only way to go from surviving to thriving is to put in the Appropriate Effort that will end your Suffering, break the status quo and move you forward to all of the goodness that comes with personal growth.
The Magic Mirror kicks you back down to Survival and you're too strong for that – bust through and #thrivetoday.
